  1. The first answer is good but I would like to add that if your friend has the raw throat as you describe then someone should call the person's oncologist or hospice and tell them what is going on because they can give you a prescription for any of a number of "magic mouthwashes" designed especially to relieve the various throat problems experienced by the dying. There is no need to make do with something like Chloroseptic (although this is not a bad suggestion) but you should instead get a strong lidocaine mouthwash that will help with the throat pain and also moisturize their throat. In the meantime a few drops or a small spoonful of glycerin (alternated with Chloroseptic?) will help keep her mouth somewhat more comfortable until you can get a prescription mouthwash.

Thanks for looking out for her. All the best to you both.

  2. The morphine and compazine didn't cause the sore throat.  If your friend can't eat or drink, I would think the sore throat is from lack of fluids.

Make sure your friend is getting fluids.  You can take a wet cloth to her mouth to refresh her membranes.... squeeze a few drops in to moisten the throat. Dehydration can cause a sore throat along with making a bad situation worse.  If she's in hospice, the nurse should be able to help you.  The nurse will be know what can be done.

    Hospice is a great service.

Over the counter, you can use Chloriseptic spray.  A couple squirts into the back of the throat.
