Sore thumb keeps Jed Lowrie away from the game against the Detroit Tigers
The Houston Astros’ shortstop Jed Lowrie could not make an appearance in Sunday’s, April 01, game against the Detroit Tigers due to some injury on the right thumb. The Astros had to play the Grapefruit League finale against the rival Tigers, where Lowrie’s
absent was conspicuous.
It was on Wednesday that he sprained his thumb, something that he might not have anticipated. For the team manager Brad Mills, it is important that the player to try swinging a little bit before the season.
He nonetheless has doubts regarding the early return of the player in the side given the soreness the player’s thumb has.
"He was pretty sore today," Mills said. "They were going to have him try to swing a little bit, but it was going to be an interesting day to see how he came along. I doubt if he was able to do too much, because it was sore when he reported. We'll have to
wait and see how he is [Monday]."
The reports, however, have not shown any worrying structural damage. If that were the case, Lowrie could possibly miss at least the first month of the season.
The Astros will currently be weighing their options as to where and when should the player be appearing in the game. The exhibition games scheduled for Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday will be of crucial importance to see if he can play.
"If this guy's not capable of playing in Major League games to start the season, I don't think we want to put him in that game on Wednesday, because we could lose another complete week of the season," Mills said.
Nonetheless, like the team manager said, it is all about the capability of player to swing the bat. If he fails doing that, there is a possibility that he may find himself in the disabled list.
That will mean missing almost six of the games in the start of the season, something of great disadvantage both for him and the team. Therefore, it will be interesting to see if the player makes his way back into the team early.
