Soren Thompson clinches gold medal in Men’s Epee Discipline of Pan American Zonal Championships
The second day of the Pan American Zonal Championship featured a gold medal win for the United States' Soren Thompson on June 5. The 2011 Pan American Zonal Championships started on July 3 at the Reno-Spark Convention Centre at Reno in Nevada.
On the first day of championships, the weapon control check and the reception of delegations were received. On second day, Women’s Sabre Individual and Men’s Epee Individual events took place. On July 4, pool matches and direct elimination table matches
were played. Soren entered in the pool matches as number two seeded fencer and took victory in all the five pool bouts.
Due to his fantastic performance in the competition, Soren was given an automatic bye to the table of 64. Soren started his direct elimination table round with the table of 16 and faced United States’ Andres Villalobos in the table of 32. The first victory,
taken by Soren, was amazing as he took the lead of 12 points with 15-3 score-line against Andres. In the table of 16, he faced Hector Brazil’s Athos Schwantes and defeated him with a score of 15-8 touches. Soren was set to face United States' Cody Mattern
in the quarter-final round.
The both fencers played very well as the score was tied with 9-9 score-line after the nine-minute bouts. The referee gave an additional minute that witnessed victory for Soren. In semi-final bout, he faced another American, Weston Kelsey, who was eliminated
by him with a score lilne of 15-12. The final victory against Venezuelan Ruben Limardo was also attained with the same score. Soren enjoyed the first place in the event with a gold medal, while Limardo was awarded with a silver medal.
In Sabre discipline of Individual women, the two-time Olympic Champion, Mariel Zagunis grabbed the gold medal of the event.
