Sorenstam fourth on ESPN list of female athletes
The ESPN list of top forty female candidates of the last forty years was compiled and published to honour the 40th anniversary of Title IX. The law was enacted on June 23, 1972, as part of reforms by President Nixon. This law was a prominent part of the
Education Reforms of 1972.
Annika Sorenstam is number four on the list. According to her it is a great honour to be considered for the list.
In a tweet on Friday, she said, "I'm honoured to be in ESPN's top five of the top 40 female athletes of the past 40 (years). Let's celebrate Title IX!"
It is a rare appearance for a golfer on a list that includes such superstars as Mary Lou Retton, Martina Navratilova and Mia Hamm.
These are the women who have become icons of their respective sports. Annika Sorenstam is placed at number four - a testimony to her skills and expertise.
Annika Sorenstam is one of the most influential female golfers of all times. She went pro in 1992. Her record as a pro golfer is as prolific. With an astounding 93 wins, Sorenstam is up there at the top of the ladder. This record still stands.
When she retired from professional golf in 2008, she had won 72 Ladies Professional Golf Association titles.
She is the first woman to play on the Bank of America Colonial tournament in 2003. Her LPGA earnings are recorded at an impressive 22 million USD.
These achievements are impressive in their own. However, she has come a long way since her standing as the top female golfer in the world.
Annika Sorenstam has built up a reputation of being opinionated on all golf related issues. Her recent comment on Tiger Woods’ loss in the U.S. Open is a case in point.
Mentioning Woods’ lack of focus, Sorenstam said that this lack of patience is his undoing. In her comment, Sorenstam said, on Thursday, on "Morning Drive", “I think that he's putting a lot of pressure on himself".
"I think that his attitude is not the way it used to (be). He's just one bad swing, and he's losing it. He used to have so much patience, so much focus. (He) was in such control for several rounds in a row, then he tees off and it's nothing like that".
Similarly in Morgan Pressel case, she has an opinion on the penalty on slow play. She agreed with the ruling of LPGA, saying that it is an issue that requires proper attention from all quarters.
Since her retirement from the pro circuit, Annika Sorenstam has been involved in a number of projects. She is an entrepreneur dealing in golf clothing and accessories. Her business is aptly named, ANNIKA.
