  1. Its not bad for your health, it just sends a message telling you something is wrong.

Missing a period when you are anorexic is telling you that you dont weigh enough so your body cant function completely. It isnt gonna weaken your bones, but not getting enough nutrional value will actually weaken bones.

  2. It's not that missing periods are bad for a girl's health, it's that missing periods can be an indicator of health problems.

Girls who are anorexic most often have severe health problems from starving themselves and stoping their periods is just a symptom of that. So is hair loss. Missing periods doesn't make bones weak, malnutrition does over time.

By the way, when girls start menstruating it can take anywhere from a little over a year to over 3 years before they actually have a regular monthly cycle. That's totally normal. I started last year and I'm not regular.

It's also not unusual to be irregular into being an adult and otherwise be healthy, but if it's been over 2 years, she should see a gynaecologist just to make sure she is ok. Hope this helps.

  3. When a woman misses her period for a long period of time, it's usually because she doesn't have enough body fat. Whatever the reason is, it makes her body think that it's not getting enough nutrition to support a pregnancy, so the menstrual cycle shuts off until she gains more fat.

It's a symptom, not a health problem. Women who are world class athletes have very little body fat, and therefore no period, but they are perfectly healthy. If a woman is not an athlete, losing her period is a sign that she probably has an eating disorder. Losing the period does not cause calcium loss from the bones; the eating disorder causes that, because they aren't eating enough calcium (because they aren't eating any food).

  4. It's only a problem if the reason she is not getting periods is related to a health problem. But for many girls and even adult women they have irregular periods and don't get them monthly. For many people this is normal. Especially for young girls, at first it can take the body a few years to regulate periods. For some girls it may take until the age of 20 or so for periods to become regular.
