i have a slight disagreement with our lose head, i feel he sets with left foot to far forward like a forward lunge. I am a experianced number 2. Having never played lose head i am not an authority on this position. Can anyone shed any light on the under world?

  1. Well on your put in, I would agree that if the loosehead put his foot too far forward it would be in the tunnel and therefore in the way of the put in.

I would speculate that if you think it's too far forward then it likely is. As for what the proper foot positioning is, for me it would be the outside (left) foot slightly forward, I'd say so the the toes on my right foot would line up with the middle of the left foot. That works for me.

I can't really see how he would have a solid base if he was going into scrums like a lunge. If his foot is that far forward he can't possibly be stable. Also, in a lunge position, it must be difficult for the flanker on that side to push since he'd be all out of position too. As a matter of fact I would think a solid impact/push from the flanker would tend to drive only your loosehead's upper left leg forward rather than seeing the push transferred through the props entire body. At best this would result in wasted effort/push at worst it would result in the scrum going down.
