Question:

Sorting laundry?

Are you supposed to sort laundry by the instructions on the tag or by the color? I heard that you're supposed to wash whites in hot or warm water, was lights in warm water, and darks in cold water, but sometimes the tags say differently (example: dark pants tag says to wash in warm water, light shirt says to wash in cold water). Which goes in which load?

  1. Lights, darks, whites

    perm press, delicates

use cold wash and you won't have problems  Cold does clean

  2. I wash all my whites in HOT WATER it cleans better along with regular bleach.

I have try several times without bleach and it does not clean as well without it.

All colors I use cold water.

  3. The tag is taking into consideration the type of fabric the garment is made of.  You could probably have 2 loads of darks, 2 loads of mediums, and 2 loads of whites!  I am cautious about the type of fabrics I buy so I don't have to be as careful as someone else might, and since my days of working are over with I don't own anything in my closet that has to be dry cleaned - and there was very little of that when I did work!

  4. whites-hot

    darks-cold

    brights-cold

    denim-cold

  5. These are the piles we use:

Whites (wash clothes, towels, underwear, work shirts/under shirts, socks)

    Whites (nice whites)

Towels (same color, we have a purple piles and a green pile)

Jeans (all jeans in the same pile)

"Good Clothes" (all of our "nice/good clothes" that arn't white)

"Special/Delicates" (all clothes that require specifics)

Generally this works very well and we wash everything in cold water.

However, whenever you buy new clothing you generally should take extra care in washing it so that is doesn't "bleed"

    Also, use net bags to:

    ~Keep all socks together

~Hold delicates (bras/underwear, stringy clothes (shirts that tie), etc)

  6. Idont think everyone does their laundry the same.I always separate mine. I wash my dark colors in cold water.  My whites in warm water,My light colors in warm water.

  7. Follow labels always. But your rule is OK if you already washed that garment your way and nothing happened.

  8. I know this may sound odd, but I sort my gender of clothing. I find that women's clothing is a lot more delicate then men's clothing. This would be general clothes, like t-shirts, shorts, pants and etc. Then I sort by color.  I also sort by what type of clothing it is. If my I have a few men's dress shirts, I'll add them with my work clothes, just as long as they are in the same color. I have to be honest. When I'm super lazy and there really isn't much laudry and no delicates. I'll throw colors and white together in cold water with oxyclean and I've never had a problem.. Oxyclean keeps the colors from fading or spreading to the lighter colors.

    Hope I helped! : )

  9. Keeping clothes sorted by color is good but sometimes more is necessary.  Jeans are dark, but washing them with a dark blouse probably isn't a good idea.  The blouse could get damaged.

I usually sort by color first, then by type of fabric while paying attention to the label instructions.
