Question:

Sound in car when I filled free-on?

Yesterday we filled my car with free-on. The gauge went all the way to the end of the blue section. So apparently we did not overfill. My husband also checked again after the filling and the results seemed ok.

Very soon after the filling- the car started to make a very bad sound. I turned off the AC and the sound stopped. Now everytime I turn on the AC it makes that terrible sound. And as soon as I turn it off- the sound stops. It sound like the car is going to break down.

Two years ago I had that same problem- although that time a mechanic told me that the ac compressor was bad. I had to pay $350 for a used compressor.

Is the same thing happening again? Now that I remember- the mechanic said he had filled the AC and had broken someting, but he fixed it. A day later is when I noticed the sound and that's when he said I needed to replace the ac compressor.

The above tempts me to believe the exact thing is happening again.

Can it be possible for the free-on to mess up the compressor?

P.S. I have a 2000 Dodge Stratus

Thanks. Ruby

  1. Sounds like you over filled the system. Over pressuring the system will cause the compressor to make a knocking sound when you turn it on. If it did not make this noise before you filled it, take it in and have it checked for the correct pressure.

  2. sounds like you have the same problem...it sounds like the compressor is trying to lock up.
