I play euphonium and I am going to a band camp where I audtion determining what high school band I will be in. Well, I just got out of middle school. Anyway, I have a grade 3 solo with 3 movements in which I played for a Solo & Ensemble event, and I got superior on it. I must play something lyrical, and something technical..no limit on how long, or what it is. I was thinking on playing that because it is more high school-ish. The only other stuff I have is my high school stand tunes, and middle school etudes. So would you go with the solo or etudes? Please help this is tomorrow!?!

  1. I am a music minor in college, but I have played piano and clarinet since elementary school.  Trust me, go with the etude.  As you get older, the judges want to hear very expressive, techincally challegning, classical pieces as opposed to modern day solos.  Choose something that shows off your range (as in ability to jump from high to low notes effectively) and something that you feel emotionally attached to.  I hope this helps, good luck! :)

  2. Do the solo. It'll help you improve. High school band directors love it when they see you're trying hard for something maybe above your level.

Oh, and congratulations on the Superior =D

  3. A very strong etude that is musical as well as technical. Show your stuff but make it clean & precise.
