  1. Volume can mean a number of things (how much space is occupied, how loud something is), but all tie to the idea of "how much?"

    In scientific terminology, volume only means how much space is occupied, though.  Loudness of sound is measured as Intensity (among other things), with sound volume not being defined scientifically.  Rather, it's more of a guesstimate used to give people a general idea of sound intensity.  "10" on my TV isn't as loud as "10" on my car stereo, for instance, but "20" is always louder than "10".
