Sound quality on PC?

Question

I have a new Gateway desktop that I would like to have better quality sound. Do I need a new sound card to accomplish this or a combo of both that and better speakers?

depends what speakers you have and what on board outputs you have. I have some logitech Z-5400 5.1 Dolbly digital, THX and DTS very nice speakers and sound great with the on board DTS Digital on my PC.

So speakers do make a big difference but if you want really good sound you are better off getting a new sound card and speakers, i would recommend logitech Z-5500 http://www.logitech.com/index.cfm/speake... they really are good speakers.

I've got the Logitech Z 550 speaker system with a SoundBlaster XtremeGamer Fatal!ty Series sound card. And the sound is is ming boggling in games, movies, music, etc. I upgraded from the SB Audigy and it was a monumental leap.
