Sound quality problems when calling Mexican mobile from UK?

Question

I live in the UK and am trying to call a friend in Mexico (Playa Del Carmen) on his mobile (cell) phone number. I have used both Skype and a pre-paid international calling card from my mobile and with both I have gotten through only to experience a load of noise on the other end (almost like crowds of people talking) and some kind of bad interference. If it is the person who I'm trying to call that picked up I couldn't hear him at all. It's strange because I know at the time I called him, and I've called him more than once now, that he would usually be at home and not out in a crowd or anywhere noisy.

I think my call is being directed from the UK via the US to Mexico because I have to dial 0052 and then a 1 before the mobile number. Anyone know if that would degrade the call quality significantly?

Has anyone else experienced problems calling mobile phones in Mexico? Are the networks over there not very good?

I really want/need to talk to this guy.

 HEY GUYS I HAVE WORSE PROBLEMS THAN THAT,BEEN TRYING TO CALL MY GIRLFRIEND FOR ALMOST A MONTH,STILL CANT GET THROUGH,WHN I DO I GET SOMEONE ELSE WTF.SOMETIMES I GET CONECTED TO HER PHONE ,BUT SHE DIDNT EVEN ANSWER THE CALL,AUTO CONNECT WITH OUT HER KNOWING!!!WTF FEEL LIKE A FLY ON THE WALL!!!THIS SHOULDNT  HAPPEN IN 2011. WORSE THING IS IF PHONES ARE DOWN,HER WEB IS DOWN ASWELL  !!!

I MISS HER MEGA!!!!!!!!!!

HAS THIS HAPPEN TO ANYONE ELSE!!!???
