Question:

Soundproofing a room?

I'm looking to soundproof a room so I can practice my guitar whenever I feel like it and have it as loud as I like without neighbours or people downstairs complaining.

Is there any cheap way to do this?

  1. try roll-on jabberlite, its polystyrene and be put up like wallpaper, and a good sound proofer

  2. I don't know what size they have to be, but you might look into using compressed straw bales...  A man reportedly rode out a tornado --in a house built out of straw bales-- without being aware of it's presence! Where I live, I think each is around 8$, but they aren't all the same size, so you'll have to work out how many you need depending on the sizes of the room, & the bales.

And you need to make sure that they won't fall on top of anyone...

  3. Cheap entails bang for the buck.

    1.  Weatherstrip all the door openings to reduce sound through the gaps around doors.

    2.  Elevate your amp off the floor to remove possibility of conductance.

    3.  Bass will vibrate and travel further.  This sound range will only be reduced by "dense" or heavy matrials.  Pricy.  This gets into isolated stud walls.  A Cheap out is to use cheap carpet held with  firring strip to cover ceiling or wall that connects to adjoining living area.  Use a fireproof carpet!  Shag lives!.

    4.  There are "sound deadening boards" available, but 5/8 sheetrock is usually applied both sides.  Not cheap.

Your cheapest way out is a basement, then apply minimal measures.  Watch your volume!  Going deaf is a possibility, and even if you only just "damage" your hearing, you'll never really know if you are getting better, or worse!  Go acoustic for practice and electric amplified for when the folks, and neighbors aren't home.  Remember a lot of musicians wear ear plugs during a stage performance.   A lot of them can't afford to lose more aural sensitivity.   Being a great musician isn't measured by your volume.  It's your quality in sound and content.  Okay so I'm Iron Butterfly and Amboy Dukes, but I loved Simon and Garfunlel and Greatful Dead.  Loud is great in it's place, but good material and consistent performance are much more important than just being super loud.  If you need to cut loose you gotta' find a garage!

    Hope some of this helps!

  4. Try carpet tiles. Easy to hang with a tack nail on each corner and they're cheap.

  5. No! To create a truly soundproof room you need double studs so the inside and outside walls are isolated from each other. Then you need sound absorbing materials on both walls, plus the floor plus the ceiling. By the way playing that guitar that loud will only last for a short while. Won't take long and you'll be as deaf as I am. Once that happens you won't be able to tell whether you're tuned right or not. When you sit three feet from a bird, see him throw his head back and sing, but hear nothing, you'll regret the loud music.

  6. there is no cheap way. to do it properly it is going to cost.

That is the trouble with doing things porperly. it costs what it is worth . Cheap always means 2nd best.

  7. HEADPHONES!!!

  8. egg cartons on the walls.

    foam is another way
