Sourabh Varma storms into Men’s Singles quarter-final at Malaysia Open GP Gold 2012
Sourabh Varma, a talented shuttler from India, penetrated into Men’s Singles quarter-final after taming Singapore’s Yong Zhao Ashton Chen in the round-of-16 at Malaysia Open GP Gold 2012 on Thursday, May 3, at Johor Bahru, Malaysia.
Sourabh, who is World Number 49 and seventh seed in Malaysia Open, showed his class by playing to his maximum potential and thrashed his Singaporean opponent in straight games without facing even a slight trouble.
The Indian was on a different level as he employed his impressive tactics in the court and wrapped up victory in straight sets without showing any mercy to his rival.
On the other hand, Yong Zhao could not dominate the pace of rallies on crucial stages in the match and eventually bowed to his spirited Indian opponent in 37 minutes.
In the first game, both men played fast and composed badminton and remained equal until the score reached at 8-8. The tempo of rallies was fast as both shuttlers took the bird early from all areas.
At this stage, Sourabh executed a few wrong shots which helped his opponent to take a reasonable lead of 11-8 until the break.
After the interval, Sourabh changed his tactics at net and started to play with deception which disturbed the flow of his opponent.
The Indian was 10-13 down when he showed his class and took 9 straight points to set up an impressive 19-13 lead on the board.
Sourabh was in full swing and he grabbed the first game with a reasonable margin of 21-18.
In the second set, the starting rallies were entertaining when both men showed aggression and remained close until 7-7.
However, Sourabh took over the control and managed to set up a reasonable lead of 11-8 on the board.
After the break, Sourabh continued taming his rival as he did not spare any chance for his Singaporean challenger in the entire concluding half of second game and ended the set with a margin of 21-16.
The higher ranked Indian won this Men’s Singles round-of-16 contest by taking 37 minutes with a 21-18 and 21-16 margin on the score board.
