Sourabh Verma defeats Andre Kurniawan Tedjono in opening round of the 2011 Thailand Open GP Gold
Indian Men’s Singles player, Sourabh Verma, has defeated Andre Kurniawan Tedjono of Indonesia, in the first round of the 2011 Thailand Open GP Gold, held at Bangkok, Thailand. The match was played on June 8, 2011.
Sourabh, who is currently ranked at the 170th spot in the Men’s Singles world standings, brushed aside the Indonesian after putting up a terrific show of top class badminton in a thrilling rubber-set fight of 71 minutes.
The Indian opened his campaign against Tedjono in a shaky manner, as he failed to control the pace of the game effectively. On the other hand, the Indonesian was playing with considerable ease in the first set. Sourabh made many errors by laying hasty shots
and lost the first set in 21 minutes, with a six-point difference of 15-21.
However, in the following set, Sourabh avoided mistakes and matched the pace of his opponent. Both shuttlers put up a wonderful show of attacking badminton, combined with superb defensive strokes. In the second-half of the set, the Indian executed some terrific
strokes in the ending moments of the game and won it with a close difference of 21-19, in 26 minutes.
The deciding set proved to be a superb fight between both players. Tedjono was playing at his best, whereas, the spirited Indian was playing a smart game with great precision. The score remained tight in the first-half of the final game.
In the second part of the third set, both players continued playing quality badminton until the score levelled at 20-20. At this crucial stage of the match, Sourabh employed aggressive tactics and grabbed two consecutive points to win the game in 24 minutes,
with a 22-20 margin. The 71-minute long three-set contest ended in the Indian’s favour, with the score of 15-21, 21-19 and 22-20.
In the Men’s Singles second round, Sourabh will fight against Jen Hao Hsu of Chinese Taipei, who proved his worth against the 15th seed, Dicky Palyama of Netherlands, in the first round of the Thailand Open.
