Sourabh Verma vows to break into Top 60 in the Men's Singles World Ranking by the end of 2011
India’s Men’s Singles shuttler, Sourabh Verma has vowed to break into the Top 60 of the Men’s Singles World Rankings, by the end of 2011. The young Indian, who played brilliantly in the recently held India Open Super Series, is currently ranked at number
173.
In the first edition of India Open Super Series, the Indian surprised everyone through his outstanding performances in the Men’s Singles draw. He participated in this event as a qualifier, but turned into a major contender by beating some experienced shuttlers
in the world of badminton.
In the opening round of the event, Sourabh thrashed Indonesia’s Sony Dwi Kuncoro, the silver medallist of the 2004 Olympics. This victory boosted his confidence and he crushed every opponent on his way towards the quarterfinal, where he lost to the World
Number 1, Lee Chong Wei of Malaysia, who eventually won the title.
While talking about his performance in the home event, Sourabh said, "It was an unbelievable week for me. Reaching the Super Series quarters and getting a chance to play with the world's best player (Lee), it was like a beautiful dream. My confidence has
been really boosted by it. It also gives me the feeling that I am ready to play top international players now."
This superb performance in the Super Series event helped him in getting at Number 173 from his previous rank of 218. Sourabh expressed that he has learnt a lot by playing against the top seed, Chong Wei. He is working hard in the academy of Pullela Gopichand,
the 2001 All England Champion.
The 19-year-old is expected to participate in the upcoming events in Russia, Canada and US. These tournaments will give him more ranking points, which will in turn help him get better standings in World Rankings.
Sourabh, who is optimistic to find sponsors for international events, further added, "Travelling abroad and accommodation cost too much. It's a heavy burden on the pocket. If I get sponsorship, it will only help my career."
If the teenager keeps performing consistently, he will not only achieve his target of getting into the Top 60, but will also earn valuable experience required to beat world class shuttlers.
