Sourav Ganguly backs Yuvraj Singh to deliver in World T20 – Cricket News Update
Former Indian captain http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Sri-Lanka-c758 this month, claiming the all-rounder is accustomed to dealing with
high expectations, and will find the T20 format an ideal vehicle for his comeback.
“He is a proven performer and expectations have always been high from him,” Ganguly said. “Not only the fans but the team will also expect consistent performance from him. He has played for a long time to be bothered by the burden of expectations.”
Realising Yuvraj’s need to ease back into the sport, post-recovery, Ganguly also went on to suggest that the T20 format would be “ideal” for the left-hander, as it was less taxing than the longer formats.
“He would spend only 3-4 hours on the field in the T20 format. The mental and the physical exertion will be less when compared to the longer formats of the game. So it would be ideal for him,” he added.
Looking to replicate their performance from their successful 2011 http://www.senore.com/Cricket/ICC-World-Cup-2011-c100625 World Cup campaign, which saw them crowned world champions, India have roped in Yuvraj for the upcoming World Twenty20. The southpaw was awarded the Player of the Tournament after the
culmination of the 2011 World Cup, after having claimed 15 wickets and scored 362 runs in 9 matches.
However, the 30-year-old had been sorely troubled by fitness complaints throughout the tournament, suffering breathing difficulties and nausea, in addition to coughing up blood, and the year ended on a bad note for him after doctors discovered a tumour in
between his lungs, diagnosed as a rare form of germ cell cancer.
Yuvraj received treatment for the disease in the United States, returned to India in April this year, and commenced fitness training in June, at the National Cricket Academy in Bangalore. He was eventually named in India’s 15-man squads for a 2-match T20I
series against http://www.senore.com/Cricket/New-Zealand-c754, and the World T20.
The first T20 against the Kiwis, on September 8, was washed out due to rain, but the second, played in Chennai on September 11, saw Yuvraj making a solid comeback. He bowled two overs for 14 and took a catch during http://www.senore.com/Cricket/India-c750’s turn in the field, in addition
to contributing a quick-fire 34 off 26 with the bat.
Although India went on to lose the match by one run, the all-rounder’s performance suggests that he will prove to be a vital cog in the make-up of the Indian team, as they seek to claim yet another victory on the world stage.
