Pune Warriors’ skipper, Sourav Ganguly, has reiterated that he will lead his Indian Premier League franchise in the final three games, despite rumours that he will opt out of the remaining matches after a disappointing time with the bat.
"Absolutely. I am the captain for the full season and will continue to be the captain," Ganguly said.
The costliest franchise in the IPL, the Warriors have failed to improve in their second season, despite starting their campaign on a promising note. The outfit claimed early victories against http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Punjab-c833 before a turbulent run saw
them losing 9 out of their last 11 matches – including six losses on the trot.
It has left the franchise second from bottom, while Ganguly’s place has also come under threat, following below-par performances. The left-hander has scored just 261 runs in 13 matches, and has a strike of only 100.81, which remains the lowest among any
top batter in his own team.
Earlier, franchise owner, Subroto http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Andrew-Symonds-c44611, said that his IPL will be the veteran’s last, and he might further opt out of the remaining bouts, in order to give youngsters the opportunity. The owner further added that Ganguly may become Warriors’ mentor, a position
he was initially offered before injury to original skipper http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Yuvraj-Singh-c98364 paved way for him to become the captain this season.
Apart from Ganguly’s indifferent performances, his team selection has also been questioned; where many believe he has done injustice to the likes of Bangladeshi opener, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Rahul-Sharma-c83352.
While the former has yet to play a game, the latter has had a stop-start season after performing exceptionally well last term.
However, the current skipper has come out and defended his situation, admitting that while his own form has not been up to par, he has done his best to lead the team in testing circumstances after the franchise sat out the final auction, following a spat
with BCCI.
“There is no doubt that the captain has to lead from the front, but it (cricket) is a team sport. Just like any other player, a captain has to perform but he is also a human being and is likely to fail... Sometimes the team could be winning when the captain
is not in form. When India won the World Cup, Dhoni was not in form until the final," he said.
