Source Engine 2 in the works – Video Games Update
A Team Fortress 2 update has revealed that Valve might actually be working on a next generation engine. Popular speculation suggests that Half-Life 3 will be the launch title for the engine.
Valve introduced the Source Engine to the public in 2004 with the release of Half-Life 2 and the engine blew everyone away. Half-Life 2 was the best looking game when it came out and the best part about it was that the engine was very PC friendly and even
supported low end machines.
However, Valve has been milking the same engine for over eight years now and many gamers have complained that its time that the company brought out an upgrade. The source engine, even though old, still manages to put out some of the best selling games. Portal,
Portal 2 and the Left 4 Dead games are developed on the Source Engine.
The recent hit, Dear Esther, which many critics agreed looked gorgeous, was also built on Valve’s engine but there comes a time where small improvements to an engine just do not cut it anymore. DICE, Crytek, Epic Games and Ubisoft have all displayed their
next generation technology and that completely blows current generation games away.
The recent leak suggests that Valve also has something big cooking up when it comes to new engines. “We don't like to brag, but Source is considered the most flexible, comprehensive, and powerful game development environment out there, and it's about to
get even better," states Valve on its official website.
Gamers however are less interested in Source Engine 2 and looking forward to what it’s likely to bring with it: Half-Life 3. Valve has left gamers hanging ever since the release of the Orange Box in 2007 which featured Half-Life 2 Episode 2 and four other
games. Episode 2 ended with a cliff hanger which was supposed to be followed by Episode 3. Gamers are still waiting for the third episode up until this day and continuously ask Valve to deliver.
There was also a rumour that Valve is gearing up for a big reveal at Gamescom and many gamers are likely to be blown away if the big reveal has anything to do with the sequel they have been patiently waiting five years for.
