if you're writing a paper and you need to cite a source, do you need to put like say the quote was "45 % of minors drink alcohol" and its from a book do you put the MLA citatiton in the essay or do you just put like say it was by john smith: "45% of minors drink alcohol" (Smith).

or what??

    That is putting the citation in the essay. MLA, and other formatting guides, say to put it directly in the text, like above, and also in a Bibliography or Works Cited page.
