Sources say Cleveland Indians’ extend Asdrubal Cabrera’s contract – MLB News
Reports are coming in the media that the Cleveland Indians have extended hitting infielder Asdrubal Cabrera’s contract after a brief discussion with him and with his agent.
Though no official statement has come out in the media regarding this late deal with Cabrera, but still many inside reports have been suggesting that both sides agreed on a two year extension which will allow Cabrera to play in the Tribe for next two years.
The Indians’ manager Manny Acta, who also did not say anything, which could suggest that the deal has done now, in-fact he did say explaining about the good things if Cabrera remained in the roster for 2014.
Acta said, “If it did happen, I'd be happy, I'd be happy for him. I'd be happy for the franchise. It's good to have one of your best players locked up and not have him worrying about arbitration hearings and things like that. It would be nice."
“He's fine. He's right at his playing weight that he had last year," added Acta. "He's worked very hard. It wasn't like he showed up here like a blimp. We want everyone here to be in top shape. That's all there is to it."
This past Major League Baseball Spring Training went well for Cabrera where he achieved consistent hitting at .211 in 12-for-57 along with four doubles, one triple, two homers and six RBI. This is quite a wonderful record for a player like Cabrera, who has
only played almost five years in the big league.
Some say as soon as he was picked by the Tribe in 2007, he was even then considered a great prospective for the Indians as later he also started performing and won many appreciations. His perfect hitting in the Minor League was the main factor as the Indians
agreed to test him in the Major League as well.
Cabrera is a talented player and this is a happy sign as he got the extension. Giving two years’ of extension also means as the Tribe has also bought his free agency of 2013. This will further help the Indians management not involving in 2014 salary arbitration.
