Souround sound and tv hook ups?

I have 2 questions. First, I have a older t.v that only has a cable line going to it so I have the cable going through the VCR and the VCR is going to my receiver but I was wondering how I could have the t.v. sound go through my reciever speakers. I also have a couple more speakers for souround sound but I dont have a sub woofer. Do I need a sub woofer to have the souround sound and center speaker to work? If anyone has any advice that would be great. Thanks

  1. If the tv has no audio out, you would have to use the VCR as a full time tuner. So instead of changing channels with your tv, you would have to change them with your VCR. You would go out from the VCR's RCA jacks into your audio receiver and still use the cable line to get the video to the tv. You need a special surround sound receiver to get true surround sound.

  2. On the back of your VCR there should be some output jacks for audio (red & white), connects these wires to an input jack on your receiver, (CD, TV, tape, etc.) Turn your receiver to the correct mode (The one you connected your VCR to), and you should hear sound for your TV.

  3. No you dont need a subwoofer to make the surrounds/centre spkrs work but you do need a receiver with seperate speaker channels for each speaker. If you have this also adjust your receiver to let it know what kind of spkr setup you have ie if you have 5 speakers/no sub the you have 5.0 sound.
