South, New Jersey and Pennsylvania celebrate victories at Women’s National Championship: Hockey News
Three thrilling matches in Women’s National Championship were played at American University yesterday afternoon with South, New Jersey and Pennsylvania scored sensational victories.
The first match of the day was played between New England and South which was a nerve-racking fight with only one goal was scored during the entire match. In the first half, New England managed to maintain the pressure on the South and kept on attacking
South’s goal-post, but it was Jackie Kintzer who blocked a lot of good attempts made by New England. At the end of first half both of the teams remained goal-less and the score was 0-0.
In the second half, South looked quite different as they changed their strategy and played a more attacking hockey as compared to the first half. They controlled the game for most of the time, winning nine penalty corners whereas New England had only one.
They made ten attempts on New England’s goal-post while New England had only three. Despite of the breath-taking play, the South remained goal-less till the 57th minute, when Jesse Gey got the ball from a rebound of another penalty corner and directed
it into the net neatly. During the last three minutes New England removed their goal-keeper and added another field player. They were hopeful of levelling the scores when they were awarded with a penalty corner in the last moments of the match, but failed
to score the equaliser. South won the game with 1-0.
The second match was played between New Jersey and Mid Atlantic where the first half was a bit slow with only one goal scored and it was by Tara Puffenberger, who opened the account for Mid Atlantic and put them ahead of New Jersey by 1-0.
In the second half some awesome play was exhibited by New Jersey with three goals scored in a very short span of time making it 3-1. Katie Reinprecht scored a brace and the third one became by the combination of Michelle Cesan and Katie Evens with the final
touch by the later one.
As the game headed towards the end, Paige Selenski made an excellent effort by dodging three of the New Jersey's defenders and reduced the score margin, making it 2-3 for Mid Atlantic. Twenty seconds before the finish of the match it was Kathleen Sharkey
with the fourth goal for New Jersey. The final score was 4-2 for New Jersey.
California and Pennsylvania were up against each other in the third and final match of the day. Pennsylvania’s goal-keeper, Amy Tran Swensan was a displayed a classic act during the entire game. California created some opportunities, but could not cross
Amy’s legs. Pennsylvania scored two goals in the first half, one from Torrie Albini and the other from Jaime Montgomery. In the second half Pennsylvania scored, in the form of Shannon Taylor, to 3-0 which remained unchanged until the end of the match.
