South Western Districts 270/64 v Eastern Province 157/178 - Eastern Province won by 3 wickets
On Saturday, January 21, 2012 Eastern Province Under-19s won the three-day CSA Under-19 Competition, Pool A – match against South Western Districts Under-19s by three wickets after successfully chasing a target of 178 runs in their second innings at Union Ground, St George's Park, Port Elizabeth.
Earlier, after ending the first day with 110 runs for the loss of seven wickets in their first innings, Eastern Province resumed their batting on the second day in a bid to overcome South Western Districts’ first innings tally of 270 runs.
Shaakir Abrahams and Angelo Charles started the day’s play as they desperately sought a tough partnership to subdue their opponents.
With 136 runs on the board, the side lost their 8th wicket when Charles departed after playing a well tamed innings of nine runs.
While the remaining batsmen were least impressive, Abrahams left his opposition flabbergasted by hammering an under pressure knock of 31 runs as he helped his side amass 157 runs without losing his wicket.
From South Western Districts, medium-pacer Marcello Piedt wrecked havoc on the batting side as he grabbed five wickets in the first innings.
South Western Districts had a rocky start to their second innings as unlike the first innings, their batsmen seemed out of colour as they failed to counter the Eastern Province bowling attack - losing wickets at random.
With only four runs on the board, South Western Districts had lost three of their top batsmen and were looking in deep trouble as they needed a steady partnership from their batsmen.
It was only the sensational batting of 42 runs by skipper Kobus Scholtz that left a mark as the rest of the batsmen were prevented from scoring in double figures by the awesome bowling from Eastern Province.
In the end, South Western Districts could muster only 64 runs in their second innings, giving their opposition a target of 178 runs to win the match.
Eastern Province Under-19s gave a cutthroat batting performance in their second innings as they successfully chased the required target in 60.1 overs with only seven wickets down.
