South Africa Open: Second Round Live Updates
What a fabulous start to the second round of the South Africa Open at the Durban Country Club!
A lot of low scoring is being witnessed on the third day of the tournament. Generally, a tournament starts on Thursday and ends on Sunday, but as rain delayed the first round, therefore, the second round currently underway at Durban.
Forty-one players have teed off and three have already reeled in eagles in the first nine holes. Richard Bland, Thomas Aiken, and Hennie Otto made use of the clear sky to earn two points on a single hole. However, the lowest score
has been attained by Bland, who birdied four more holes on the back nine to wrap the first half at six-under-par 30. Aiken tried building a constant pace, but missed a shot at the par-4 16th and failed to create a strong impression. The South African
will have to pick eight points through eagles or either birdies to compete with the leaders.
Charl Schwartzel, Ernie Els, Alexander Cejka, and Branden Grace chose to tee from the back nine. The veterans are occupying the first three spots of the current leader board respectively. Schwartzel, who held the second place
in the first round fired four birdies without a loss to compile a score of 11-under-par. On the other hand, Els is three-under after the first nine holes and is ready to bombshell the closing holes.
Cejka who held the lead in the first round has earned a single point after birdying the par-5 14th, which has been hammered by eight other players. The down-sloped hole is considered as the easiest on the par-72 course
and is merely an approach with green hits in regulation.
Romain Wattel is eight-under after the seven holes of the front nine. The player who hails from France has fired three back-to-back birdies starting from the third hole and is approaching the eight- tee with his caddie. Meanwhile,
his compatriot Victor Riu eagled the 13th and birdied the next to compile a score of 3-under-par after six holes.
Retief Goosen, who led the field in the first round alongside Cejka have not teed off, but is expected to give strong competition to the top scorers today.
