http://www.senore.com/Cricket/England-c56013 women amassed a huge total of 297 when they batted first in the opening One Day International (ODI) against South Africa women at Senwes Park, Potchefstroom on Friday, October 21, 2011.
The South African women failed to grab a wicket after the top-three departed without contributing anything special. http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Arran-Brindle-c45514 were the ladies who smashed centuries after a not-so-impressive show by the top three guns and guided their
side to a handsome total.
Since it was not a clear day at Potchefstroom, the South African skipper choose to field first after winning the toss. Her bowlers performed outstanding initially, as they grabbed couple of wickets within the first eight overs.
The English captain, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Charlotte-Marie-Edwards-c50507, lost her wicket after scoring one run, while her partner at the opening position, Danni Wyatt, went back to the pavilion after chipping in 21 runs.
The English wicket-keeper batter, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Sarah-Jane-Taylor-c88769, tried to improve things by smashing a quick innings of 33 runs but a terrible mix-up became the reason of her dismissal at a critical juncture.
Three down for 79, the home side was aiming to restrict the opposition to a paltry score but the duo stepped forward and made the South African ladies realise that there is a difference between dream and reality.
Both batters demonstrated a superb show and put their team on the right track to achieve a good score. They started off cautiously, leaving everything outside the off-stump but subsequently picked up the pace as the innings progressed.
Greenway smashed 12 lovely boundaries during her stay at the crease and scored runs at a very good strike rate. Brindle batted at even a better strike rate, as she hit 15 cracking boundaries for her hundred.
Greenway and Brindle left the crease after playing excellent knocks of 125 and 107 runs respectively. Following a brilliant batting show by the middle-order batters, the Englishwomen piled up 297 for three after 50 overs.
From the Proteas bowling unit, Shabnim http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Marizanne-Kapp-c74483 bagged a wicket each while rest of the bowling attack returned without any dismissal to their credit.
To hamper English ladies from registering their first win on the tour, the South African women need 298 at an asking rate of almost 6 per over.
