South Africa Women v England Women – 1st T20I - Match Recap
South Africa Women 128/6 (20 /20 ov); England Women 131 (17.1/20 ov) - England Women won by 7 wickets (with 17 balls remaining)
England Women beat the hosts, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/South-Africa-c757 Women, by 7 wickets in the first Twenty20 international of the three match series on Thursday, October 27, 2011, at Senwes Park, Potchefstroom.
The Toss went South Africa’s way and their skipper, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Mignon-du-Preez-c76274, decided to bat first.
English new ball bowlers, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Arran-Brindle-c45514, were right on the money from the word go. They did not allow oppositions batters any room to free their arms and bowled a nippy line and length, challenging the South African
vanguards for runs.
The fielders supported their bowlers and stopped a couple of certain boundaries. But, the biggest contribution from English fielders came in the sixth over, when Danni Hazell and Arran Brindle joined forces to see the back of Dane
http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Graham-Robert-Cowdrey-c60631 Niekerk.
The opening batter scored 11 runs from 16 deliveries. Brindle continued to be England’s talisman, when in the eight over, the 29-year-old showed http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Trisha-Chetty-c94414 (16) her way to the pavilion.
The Proteas were finding it difficult to score runs against the aggressive bowling from English bowlers. The South African run-rate at the half way stage was even below 5 runs per over.
On the penultimate delivery of the 11th over, England struck again, this time it was Hazell who put South African skipper, Mignon du Preez, out of her misery. The off-spinner bowled a delivery that proved to be too good
for the African captain, as it scattered her stumps.
http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Alison-Lucille-Hodgkinson-c43649, who was in good knick, was tearing her hair out in hopes of finding a partner who would lay her some support after Yolandi van der Westhuizen got out after scoring 11 runs.
Fortunately, she found a reliable partner in the shape of Chloe Tryon. The duo took the game right back at the English bowlers. They were aggressive in their approach and scaled 45 runs in no time.
Guha brought their outburst to an end in the 19th over by dismissing Tryon (31). Hodgkinson eventually got run out on the final ball of the innings, bringing an end to a sizzling 51. The batter played her part in giving
her team's bowlers a chance to prove themselves.
However, Hodgkinson’s efforts went in vain as http://www.senore.com/Cricket/England-c56013 made a mockery of the 128-run South African total.
The tourists chased down the total in 17.1 overs with the loss of just three wickets. The Proteas took an early wicket but failed to capitalize on the good start. English skipper, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Charlotte-Marie-Edwards-c50507, led from the front and scaled
49 runs.
However, it was the power hitting of http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Sarah-Jane-Taylor-c88769 that made sure the English team did not lose the plot. The aggressive batter scored 50 runs from just 33 deliveries and struck nine boundaries to be titled the Player of the Match.
