South Africa captures Women’s 400m freestyle relay title: 2011 All African Games – Day three
Day three of the 2011 All African Games got off to an impeccable start at the Zimpeto National Stadium, in Maputo, Mozambique, on Wednesday, September 7. The session of the meet conducted both the Women’s 400m freestyle relay and Men’s 800m freestyle relay
final events.
At the beginning, South Africa’s group of four swimmers including Karin Prinsloo, Natasha De Vos, Roxanne Tammadge and Suzaan van Biljon took home the Women’s 400m freestyle relay title on the podium by posting a winning time of 3 minutes and 53.93 seconds.
In the corresponding swim, Zimbabwe’s group consisting Kristy Coventry, Samantha Welch, Kristen Lapham and Nicole Horn secured the silver medal on the podium by submitting an inspiring time of 3 minutes and 57.81 seconds.
In the meantime, Algeria’s squad of Fella Benaceur, Melia Mghezzi Bekhouche, Sarah Hadj Abderrahmane and Amel Melih captured the bronze medal of the platform by posting an eye catching time of 4 minutes and 02.84 seconds. Mozambique earned fourth place honours
in a time of 4 minutes and 10.10 seconds, whereas, Nigeria settled fifth in a time of 4 minutes and 18.42 seconds. Moreover, Kenya finished sixth in a time of 4 minutes and 20.39 seconds.
Afterwards, South Africa’s group of four athletes, Jasper Venter, Riaan Schoeman, Leith Shankland and Darian Townsend won the gold medal in the Men’s 800m freestyle relay final heat with a winning time of 7 minutes and 33.63 seconds. Her swim beat Algeria’s
previous best time of 7 minutes and 35.70 seconds, set back in 2002. Algeria took home the silver medal on the podium by posting a captivating time of 7 minutes and 49.59 seconds
Kenya earned bronze medal in a time of 8 minutes and 01.07seconds, while Angola earned fourth place honours in a time of 8 minutes and 09.55 seconds. Senegal was placed fifth in a time of 8 minutes and 18.06 seconds, whereas, Zimbabwe earned sixth position
in a time of 8 minutes and 21.44 seconds. Last, but not the least, Nigeria ended seventh in 8 minutes and 30.61 seconds.
All athletes took a huge round of applause from the crowd because of their stunning swims, while the winners were honoured with medals and accolades after the session’s completion.
