  1. It is next to impossible getting accurate information about crime statistics in South Africa.

Government statistics are watered down, however the last time Interpol and the SA Medical Research Council produced their own "unhindered" statistics their results were embarrassingly way above what the Government were reporting:

There are many causes for the under reporting and discrepancies with respect to crime statistics:

    1) Non assignment of case numbers - according to the South African National Funeral Directors Association in many homicides identified at mortuaries there was no police case number.

    2) An ineffective judicial system results in many crimes (especially rape, muggings and assaults) not being reported -  why go through the hassle/trauma of reporting when justice is an improbability.

    3) An active government campaign to reduce crime statistics through non-reporting and manipulation for a better international image.

  2. There is no such thing as a RELIABLE crime statistics site as the numbers are dumbed down by the ANC to make the Country look better than it actually is. The last time Interpol had access to figures was in 2005 and they stated that the figures were at least 50% under reported. They were supported in their assertions by the SA Medical Association who based their numbers on actual case admissions. Here are a couple of sites you can visit:

  3. I don't know the numbers but what I do know is that everyone has experienced a break-in or a mugging. There are break-in happening every day and they're not far, they happen to be just down the street or sometimes even our very own neighbours.

It's a common thing here to be held at gunpoint and that's exactly why all the smart people are flocking overseas.
