South Africa dominates at the 2011 All Africa Games in Mozambique: Day one
Day one of the 2011 All African Games began in impressive fashion at the Zimpeto National Stadium, in Maputo, Mozambique, on Monday, September 5. The session of the meet conducted several scintillating performances. Karin Prinsloo won the Women’s 100m freestyle
and 50m back-stroke titles.
Cameron Van Der Burg took home the Men’s 100m breast-stroke crown, while Kirsty Coventry secured the gold medal in the Women’s 400m Individual Medley event. Ahmed Mathlouthi earned the gold medal in the Men’s 200m freestyle final heat, whereas, Charl Crous
captured the golden crown in the Men’s 50m back-stroke race.
Initially, Karin Prinsloo of South Africa snared the gold medal in the Women’s 100m freestyle race with a triumphant time of 56.05 seconds, while Prinsloo snagged her second gold medal of the meet in the Women’s 50m back-stroke with a sterling mark of 29.28
seconds. In the corresponding race, Mandy Loots secured the silver title on the podium by posting an impressive time of 29.76 seconds.
In the Men’s 100m breast-stroke final, Cameron van der Burgh of South Africa took home the golden crown with a victorious time of 1 minute and 02.44 seconds. Meanwhile, Wassim Elloumi of Tunisia was placed second in a time of 1 minute and 03.17 seconds.
Then, the Women’s 400m IM title was taken over by Kirsty Coventry of Zimbabwe with a winning time of 4 minutes and 44.34 seconds. In the corresponding splash, Kathryn Meaklim of South Africa was placed second with a matchless mark of 4 minutes and 46.33
seconds and Bianca Meyer earned third place honours with an impressive time of 4 minutes and 51.20 seconds.
In the Men’s 200m freestyle final meet, Tunisia's Ahmed Mathlouthi earned the golden crown with a winning mark of 1 minute and 48.95 seconds. In the meantime, South Africa's Darian Townsend took home the silver medal with a distinctive time of 1 minute and
49.04 seconds and Jean Basson rounded out the top three in a time of 1 minute and 51.06 seconds.
Last, but not the least, the Men’s 50m back-stroke title was taken over by South Africa's Charl Crous with a winning time of 26.06 seconds. Kenya's Jason Dunford was placed second in a time of 26.19 seconds, while South Africa's Garth Tune earned third place
honours in a time of 26.74 seconds.
The arena applauded for the exciting and versatile swims of all athletes, while the winners were awarded medals and accolades after the session’s completion.
