South Africa name squad for upcoming series against England – Cricket News Update

South Africa has named a 15-strong squad which will travel to Europe to play England in arguably the most anticipated Test series of the year, which begins in late July.

The group is unchanged from the one which emerged triumphant from their previous tour of New Zealand, where they claimed the Test series by a 1-0 margin.

The Proteas, currently ranked no.2, will kick-start the tour with two warm-up matches against Somerset and Kent before locking horns with Poms in the first Test at the Oval. They will then play two more practice games against Worcestershire and Derbyshire,
slotted between the second and third respectively.

The clashes will have a major bearing on which side claims the top Test spot in the ICC rankings – a title currently held by England. Both have emerged as the dominant forces in the longer version, owing to their batting and bowling prowess.

Andrew Hudson, SA’s chief selector, was content with the overall combination which will battle England and was hopeful that the group will be able to achieve similar sort success as they had done in their previous away series.

“The players fully deserve a vote of confidence after the outstanding manner in which they outplayed New Zealand away from home," Hudson said. "We are now building up excellent depth in both the batting and bowling departments. This was highlighted by JP
Duminy's century when he was called up as an 11th hour replacement for Jacques Kallis.”

"I believe most other countries would be very happy to have the fast bowling resources we have at the moment. Consistency has also been one of the key pillars of our selection policy and this is also contributing to our success on the field."

The last time the Proteas were in England, they claimed the Test series 2-1. However, before their bouts against the Poms, the team will play a T20 triangular series in Zimbabwe, involving the hosts and Bangladesh.

Squad for England Test series:

Graeme Smith (captain), Hashim Amla, Mark Boucher, Marchant de Lange, AB de Villiers, JP Duminy, Imran Tahir, Jacques Kallis, Morne Morkel, Alviro Petersen, Robin Peterson, Vernon Philander, Jacques Rudolph, Dale Steyn, Lonwabo Tsotsobe.
