South Africa not prepared to be complacent, says Graeme Smith – Cricket News Update

Graeme Smith, the South African Test captain, is over the moon after whitewashing Pakistan in the three-match Test series and said that it is extremely satisfying for him to see that the Proteas did not show any kind of complacency in the last match.

The hosts outclassed Pakistan in all departments of the game and won the third Test at Centurion within three days by a huge margin of an innings and 18 runs.

Having won the toss, Smith opted to bat first on a track that was expected to deteriorate with the passage of time. Thanks to a stunning century by AB de Villiers and a brilliant 92 by Hashim Amla, South Africa posted a mammoth total of 409 runs on the board
in their first innings.

In reply, Pakistan were dismissed for merely 156 runs in their first innings, with the debutant, Kyle Abbott picking up seven wickets to break the back of the visitors’ batting. Misbah-ul-Haq and company had to bat again after being followed-on, managing
only 235 runs in their second turn. Abbott was named as the Player of the Match for his nine wickets in two innings.

While speaking to reporters after the match, Smith expressed that he is delighted to see his team giving their hundred percent, although they had already won the series after the Cape Town Test.

"To win so convincingly in this Test was important," Smith said. "In matches like this, it's very easy to be soft or not to give commitment to the cause. Even if you are 10% off your game at this level, then you are not going to be able to produce a performance.
To see our batsmen front out and our bowlers put in the hard yards shows good signs as a team. It shows we are hungry."

The left-handed opener is satisfied with his team’s growth in recent years and claimed, "This team is about maturity and professionalism. The focus has been good. The guys understand what it takes and have been preparing that way."

The two-match T20 series between the two teams begins from Friday at Durban.
