South Africa outshines at 10th CAA African junior championship – Athletics Update
The 10th CAA African junior championship has kicked off on Thursday, May 12 at Gaborone, Botswana.
On the first day of the event, the South African team attained the highest amount of five medals. This included one gold, three silver and one bronze medal.
On the first day meet, among the Girls category of discus, thrower Ischke Senekal did her personal best by throwing 49.9 metres far and clinched the gold medal while her compatriot Simone Meyer accomplished a brilliant performance for bronze.
The result of Girls’ Pole Vaulting, Tunisia's Mahfoundhi Dorra won the gold medal by vaulting 3.40 metres. Jeanne Van Dyk and Mariska Smit collected silver medal jointly as they both achieved 3.35 metres.
The result of first day long jump, Kabbachi el Mehd of Morocco earned gold, as South African Roelf Pienaar clinched silver for the third time for his country and it was his fifth medal of the championships. Pienaar jumped for 7.55 metres this year, whereas
it was 7.49 m last year in the same championship.
The result of day two of the 10th CAA African junior championship, South African team bagged five more medals again. The medals include two gold, one silver medal and two bronze medals.

In the Junior Women 100 metres hurdles, Kyla Gilbert clocked 14.25 seconds and claimed the gold medal. Liriska Botha, the team-mate of Bolbert, ranked second in the same meet. In the 100 metres Junior Women race, Chante van Tonder claimed a bronze medal
after completing the distance in the time span of 12.05.
The 100 metres race for Junior Men, South African’s ranked first and third. Gideon Trotter has clocked 10.50 seconds for gold and the bronze medal was taken by Emile Erasmus.
On the occasion the spectators enjoyed the stunning meets, as the organisers are expecting more viewers on the weekend and for the closing ceremony.
The four day event is underway at Gaborone, Botswana and will conclude on Sunday, May 15 at the same venue.
