South Africa secures Men’s 400m freestyle relay crown: Day four – 2011 All African Games
South African athletes produced a stunning splash on day four of the 2011 All African Games at the Zimpeto National Stadium, in Maputo, Mozambique, on Thursday, September 8. The session of the meet conducted the Men’s 400m freestyle relay final, where South
Africa’s team of Leith Shankland, Chad Le Clos, Gideon Louw and Darian Townsend hit the wall in barely 3 minutes and 19.42 seconds to clinch the gold medal on the podium.
More importantly, South Africa thrashed down their previous best meet record of 3 minutes and 22.52 seconds, set back in 2007. After the effort, South Africa’s swimmers were thrilled due to their matchless swims in the competition.
In the corresponding race, Algeria’s group of four swimmers, Nabil Kebbab, Oussama Sahnoune, Jughurtha Bournalie and Ryad Djendouci took home the silver medal on the podium by posting a winning time of 3 minutes and 26.51 seconds. Kenya’s quartet of Jason
Dunford, David Dunford, Rama Vyombo and Kiptolo Boit earned bronze medal on the podium by submitting a stunning time of 3 minutes and 29.84 seconds. After the race, Kenyan swimmers were pleased with their own effort in the final meet.
Meanwhile, Senegal was placed fourth in a finishing time of 4 minutes and 39.24 seconds and Nigeria earned fifth place honours with an impressive mark of 3 minutes and 39.66 seconds. In the corresponding swim, Angola was placed sixth in a time of 3 minutes
and 41.82 seconds and Zimbabwe settled seventh in a time of 3 minutes and 43.14 seconds.
Mozambique earned eighth place honours with a finishing mark of 3 minutes and 47.63 seconds. Last, but not the least, Zambia finished ninth in a time of 3 minutes and 57.72 seconds. All athletes of Zambia were not satisfied with the way the whole squad performed
in the pool during the respective meet.
All the swimmers of the race took a huge ovation from the crowd due to their impressive swims, while the winners were honoured with medals and accolades after the session’s completion.
