Please do not be offended by this question.

My husband and I will be travelling to South Africa in February. We would like to make a second trip in a few years, but bring the family We have an interracial family: one biological (Caucasian) teenage son and two children adopted from West Africa (Liberia).

Would my family encounter problems in South Africa because of our diversity?

Again, please don't be offended. I would be very careful travelling with my children in some parts of the US, too!

Thank you!

  1. No offense taken, I understand what you mean.

Well you will not encounter any difficulties.  To be honest with you (and please don't take offense) a few people might just look at your family twice, not for any particular reason it is just that the rainbow nation is a new thing (well 10 years old but people are slow to accept) and because of all the difficulties of the past people are not use to it, but they do not mean anything by it.

South Africa is a beautiful place and I hope you and your family have a wonderful time.

  2. No. South Africans just love Mozambicans,Nigerians,Malawians,Ethiopia... and Somalis. They murder them usually by stoning and then set fire to them. Its been on the News Channels worldwide or maybe you havent noticed.Americans are the favourite however as they love to empty your wallets with all those "hard luck" tales they invent about the "legacy of apartheid."

Dont worry about the 2nd trip. If you survive the 1st one you will never want to go back.

  3. No - you might get some strange looks in the smaller towns but in places like Cape Town, there is a "trend" of interracial families so people in larger towns / cities will be more used to it. Enjoy your holiday....
