The pitch had a bit of juice in it for the new-ball bowlers and it was for sure that whichever captain wins the toss will opt to bowl first in order to take advantage of an early morning bowling conditions.
The Netherlands captain, Peter Borren, did just that by putting South Africa into bat first. His bowlers answered their captain’s call by bowling in the right areas. They made it difficult for the opposition batsmen to score runs freely.
Bernard Loots has been the pick of the seamers for the Dutch, picking up 1 for 2 in two incisive overs. His medium pace bowling has proved too much for the opposition, as they have found him difficult to counterattack.
Netherlands seam bowlers, Mudassar Bukhari, and, Ryan Ten Doeschate haven’t picked up a wicket in their first spell, though they have kept things quiet and have made the willowers play defensively. Bukhari’s six overs cost him 17 runs, while Doeschate conceded 13 runs in his three overs.
Earlier, Graeme Smith and Hashim Amla put up a resilient 51-run partnership and put South Africa in a comfortable position. In the overcast conditions, the opening pair has provided them with a solid start.
Smith got off to decent start and amassed 20 runs off 32 balls. His approach was measured and he is looking well settled for big score
Amla has looked good so far and stroked the ball nicely on a dicey pitch. The ball is not coming onto the bat, but Amla had worked it out and had eased his way to a good looking 34 runs off 49 balls.
The Dutch bowlers have bowled with a plan and have caused all sorts of problems for the opposition willowers. They have been extremely unlucky to pick up only one wicket, as on any other day they would have easily picked up four wickets with this determined bowling effort.
