South Africa vs. Ireland: First innings - Part 2 – ICC World Cup 2011 Recap
Mooney was replaced by Stirling as Duminy began establishing himself on the crease. Another great piece of ground fielding however meant that Duminy and Kallis were not going to have a long partnership. Not quick enough to reach the crease, Kallis was run
out for 19 after the third umpire ruled him out.
Faf Du Plessis’ stay on the crease was not a long one either, as a he made his way back to the pavilion after an average performance. Caught at slip by Johnston, as the Irish captain’s decision to keep Stirling in the bowling attack paid off.
That was to be the last piece of celebrating for the Irish for quite some time, as Duminy and Colin Ingram began a long batting partnership. Starting with South Africa at 117 for 5 the pair stayed on the crease and tormented the Irish bowling attack until
the 40th over.
Playing the Irish bowling attack all over the park in a partnership that was made of both singles as well as boundaries managed to frustrate the Irish. After being in a strong position Ingram and Duminy took the match away from the Irish.
Ingram was unlucky, as he was just four runs shy of his half century when he was bowled by Johnston, but not before Duminy reached his half century.
Duminy and http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Johan-Botha-c67173 continued to bat aggressively, sending the ball rolling past the boundary whenever the opportunity presented itself.
Cursing his luck, Duminy’s superb innings was not to be rewarded with a century, as in the last over he was out for 99 runs. Mooney thought he had been smashed for a huge hit when Duminy lofted the ball high in the air, but Kevin O’Brien made up for his
earlier mistake as he took the catch.
http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Ireland-c751 seemed to have the upper hand with the early wickets, but one partnership ensured that the early collapse was not too damaging for the Proteas.
The Irish were a side more than capable of causing an upset on their day after beating England, as they had to chase in excess of 300 runs. Similar heroics will be needed by the side, as they looked to maintain a run rate of 5.44 runs per over.
South Africa had one foot in the quarter-finals, and the pressure was on their bowlers to ensure that they will make it through.
