http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Ireland-c751: Second innings - Part 1 – ICC World Cup 2011 Recap
South Africa set Ireland a target of 273 runs to chase after the Irish, having won the toss elected to bowl first. After losing a few early wickets the Proteas came back strongly through some brilliant batting by Duminy and Ingram. The Irish side were left
with the daunting task of a required run rate of 5.44 runs per over.
http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Morne-Morkel-c77722 opened the attack for the bowling side, as Ireland had William Porterfield and Paul Stirling on the crease looking to get the Irish off to a strong start. Porterfield showed his intentions as soon as the fourth ball of the first
over, as he found the boundary with his shot.
The first wicket fell in the second over when Porterfield was tempted into driving the ball only to have it travel into the safe hands of Graeme http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Smith-c90600 at first slip. Morkel celebrated his first wicket, as the Proteas had their early break-through.
Steyn was left frustrated in the next over when Morne’s ability to take a catch failed him. To add salt to the wound the ball, then went for a boundary. Luck seemed to be on Ireland’s side.
Morkel did makes amends though when after being hit for four by Stirling, he had the batsman on his way back to the pavilion the next ball. Jacques Kallis took a simple catch and Morkel had his second wicket.
http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Ed-Joyce-c1417 and Niall O’Brien were now tasked with steadying the ship for the Irish. O’Brien recorded Ireland’s first six of the match, as he cleared the mid on boundary with a clean hit. The Proteas captain realising the need for a bowling change brought on
Kallis.
A shrewd move, as Kallis got the break-through in his first over. Niall O’Brien got a nick on the ball, as van Wyk gathered it in his gloves. Gary http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Wilson-c98046 was the next man in after play was halted for a drinks break.
The required run rate was nearing the six run an over mark when Joyce decided to take matters in his own hands, hitting Morkel for two fours in the 10th over. His eagerness to get the scoreboard ticking cost him his wicket when another bowling
change by Smith paid dividends.
http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Johan-Botha-c67173 had him out leg before wicket for 12 runs despite the Irish attempting to review the decision. Kevin O’Brien was the next man in as Robin Peterson replaced Morkel in the bowling attack.
