South Africa win Women’s 400m freestyle relay title: Day three – 2011 All African Games
Day three of the 2011 All African Games began in stunning fashion at the Zimpeto National Stadium in Maputo, Mozambique, on Wednesday, September 7. The session of the meet conducted the Women’s 400m freestyle relay and Men’s 800m freestyle relay finals.
Firstly, the Women’s 400m freestyle relay crown was taken over by South Africa’s team of Karin Prinsloo, Natasha De Vos, Roxanne Tammadge and Suzaan van Biljon with a winning mark of 3 minutes and 53.93 seconds. In the corresponding meet, Zimbabwe’s squad
of Kristy Coventry, Samantha Welch, Kristen Lapham and Nicole Horn took home the silver medal on the podium by posting an impressive time of 3 minutes and 57.81 seconds.
Algeria’s group of four swimmers consisting of Fella Benaceur, Melia Mghezzi Bekhouche, Sarah Hadj Abderahmane and Amel Melih earned bronze medal on the podium by submitting a stunning time of 4 minutes and 02.84 seconds. Mozambique was placed fourth with
a matchless mark of 4 minutes and 10.10 seconds, while Nigeria rounded out the top five in a time of 4 minutes and 18.42 seconds.
Last, but not the least, Kenya earned sixth place honours with a time of 4 minutes and 20.39 seconds.
Meanwhile, the Men’s 800m freestyle relay crown was taken over by South Africa’s team of Jasper Venter, Riaan Schoeman, Leith Shankland and Darian Townsend with a victorious time of 7 minutes and 33.63 seconds. The effort thrashed down Algeria’s previous
best meet record of 7 minutes and 35.70 seconds, set back at the 2002 edition of the competition. Algeria earned silver medal on the podium with a winning time of 7 minutes and 49.59 seconds, while Kenya grabbed bronze medal in 8 minutes and 01.07 seconds.
Angola settled fourth in a time of 8 minutes and 09.55 seconds. Senegal finished fifth in a time of 8 minutes and 18.06 seconds, while Zimbabwe was placed sixth in 8 minutes and 21.44 seconds. Finally, Nigeria earned seventh place honours in the respective
meet with a time of 8 minutes and 30.61 seconds.
