South African Open: Caroline Masson leads after round 1
The first round of South African Women’s Open just ended and the results have surprised everyone. The German star, Caroline Masson is leading with a score of 3-under par 69.
She led the round by a two-stroke margin over the second place score of 71. This performance has astonished many experts who had originally placed the German player at the middle of the leaderboard.
Caroline Masson started out the game with a normal score. On the fourth hole, she shot a birdie. She scored another birdie on the 8th hole. This was not the end of the day for Masson. She shot a bogey on the 15th hole.
This performance was more than what was expected form Masson, who is the current world’s number 74. South African Women’s Open has attracted great international talent and this performance is a clear evidence of Mason’s skill.
This performance is made all the more spectacular owing to the fact that Masson is not familiar with Selborne Park Golf Club, the course where the event is being held.
She had to hire local personnel and with their help, started the tournament on a great note. Talking about the help she received from the local sources, she said, “It wasn’t easy, but my local caddie helped a lot with the wind direction”.
Selborne Park Golf Club is a notoriously difficult course to play on. Many local players face problems in playing the rough terrain of the course. Masson, being a foreigner, faced the issue even more.
She elaborated on the playing conditions and said, “The back nine is tough. You have to hit some good long irons in, and can’t make too many mistakes. If you miss the fairways here the balls are gone. You have to really focus on every shot, and there’s no
hole where you can really relax”.
The South African players also did well on the first day of the event. The best local player was Stacy Lee Bregman, who tied for the second place with a score of 71.
Other South African players who finished in top-10 were Ashleigh Simon at number 6, Morgana Robbertze and Connie Chen at number 9.
