South African Open Championship - First round score round up
South African Open in underway at the Serengeti Golf Club. Although it is not a very high profile tournament, but the winner gets 35 points in the Official World Golf Rankings.
After round one, Merrick Bremner led a fairly strong pack of field. Bremner shot a solid round of eight-under.
Merrick is known for his big booming drives accuracy, and this was precisely the reason for his success at the Serengeti Golf Club.
Merrick started off brilliantly and soon gained ascendency, as he looked solid with his game. He currently leads the tournament by two strokes. Following him are Mathew Carvell and Henrik Stenson.
Carvell and Stenson, both, shot fairly decent rounds of six-under on a day where conditions favoured the golfers.
Stenson has the experience of playing both, on the European and PGA tours. The Swede is quite an experienced pro.
The Scottish Craig Lee shot a fairly even round of five-under, as he looks to get his first win on the Sunshine Tour.
Lee currently plies his trade on the European tour and that experience will certainly help him to make inroads in this South African Open.
South African, Charl Chwartzel did not have the best of starts, as he trailed Bremner by a good four strokes. Charl had an average round, carding four-under for the day.
He certainly needs to improve his putting if wants to get further in this tournament.
The German and a former world number one, Martin Kaymer, had a poor start to the tournament, as he could only come up with a two-under for the day.
Kaymer needs to sharpen his clubs big time for the next rounds to have any chance of winning the South African Open.
The South African Open is one of the oldest tournaments in the history of golf and is the most prized tournament on the Sunshine tour.
The event is also co sanctioned by the European Tour, with winner bagging 35 Official World Golf Ranking Points.
The tournament does not attract big name players, as it is played in the off season. Many players at this time of the year are charging their batteries for the next season.
