South African Rugby Union to name Springboks' new coach in 2012 – Rugby News
The governing body of Rugby Union in South Africa, the South African Rugby Union (SARU), has announced that they will name their national side’s new coach in 2012. The SARU Chief Executive
Officer (CEO), Jurie Roux, made the comments on Tuesday, October 11.
The South African national Rugby Union team, commonly known as the Springboks, were the defending champions in the 2011 Rugby World Cup (RWC) tournament, and their campaign was put to an end
by the 2011 Tri Nations champions, Wallabies last Sunday, October 9 at Eden Park, Auckland.
Following their exit from the rugby union’s premier tournament, different news regarding Springboks coaching job began to surface. Initially, it was reported that their current coach, Peter
de Villiers has resigned from his role as the head coach of the team, following their unsuccessful RWC title defence.
Later, Springboks former world cup winning coach, Jake White, who led the side in their 2007 title win, publically announced his interest in the position. However, upon his arrival at the South
Africa, de Villiers denied any reports of his pre-mature resignation and confirmed that he will be in charge of the team until the end of his current tenure i.e. until 31 December 2011.
Next, White turned away from his statement saying he will see through his newly signed four-year contract with the Australian Super Rugby franchise, ACT Brumbies.
Roux confirmed that the SARU will adhere to the SARU’s executive council decision taken earlier this year in July, regarding conduction the formal review of the 2011 season at the end of the
year. He further added that any new appointments or extension in the services/contract will be done at the end of the pre planed review.
Roux further added, “The appointment of the Springbok coaches and management team are easily among the most important decisions we must take as an organisation.” He added that SARU is aware
of the general interest of the masses regarding the announcement of coach to lead the Springboks further. He added that SARU will take the decision, which is in the best interest of the team.
In their next international assignment, Springboks' will take on England in a three test series, at the end of the 2012 Super Rugby season, in June 2011.
