South African Women's Open: Connie Chen determined to improve her standing
The first round of South African Women’s Open is over and the results are not favourable for Connie Chen, the South African player. She started out at the ninth position and ended the round at the 17th.
Connie Chen scored a not so impressive 73 in the first round. While many experts had predicted this performance, Chen herself is determined to prove the experts wrong.
Chen turned pro in 2010. Before that, she had a great amateur career with a string of honours attached to it.
At the time of her going professional, she was ranked as the number one amateur player in South Africa. With this record, many experts welcomed her decision to go professional.
Her pro career left many guessing about her potential on the pro golf circuit. Experts saw a successful amateur, who was suffering the pressures of professional life.
Based on this analysis, they rated Chen as an average performer in the South African Women’s Open.
She started the event at a very good position. At number nine, she had just eight players before her and this usually is not a difficult target for a player of Chen’s calibre to overcome. However, she was pitted against the top talent from around the world.
She proved to be of no match for the leading South African and international players. She slid down steadily and ended up at the 16th position at the end of the round.
Connie Chen is an important member of the South African squad. Discussing her game, she said that she is not satisfied with her performance. She will work hard to reach the top-10 in the second round.
South Africa is well represented in the event. The stars have not performed well yet. The second tier players like Stacy Lee Bregman and Ashleigh Simon have shouldered the responsibility of keeping the trophy home. They have played very well and now stand
in the top 10 rankings.
The tournament has just begun. The first round shows that, while South African players like Connie Chen are not out of the rankings, they face a tough opposition from international players.
