South African Women's Open: Stacy Lee Bregman tied at second place
After the first round of South African Women’s Open, the results are in and Stacy Lee Bregman is the leading South African player with a second position on the leaderboard.
Bregman was the top South African player at the Selborne Park Golf Club with a score of 71. She trailed the German star Caroline Masson by two strokes. Bregman was very satisfied with her game on the first day of the event.
Talking about her performance, she said, “I played really solid, and had a lot of close opportunities out there.” These opportunities were transformed into a solid score of 1-under par 71.
Experts pointed out that this score is amazing because of another oft overlooked factor. Despite being a local player, Bregman has never played in Selborne Park Golf Club. This disadvantage did not stop her from shooting to the second best potion on the
leaderboard.
She was joined in the top-ten by three other South African players. The second best South African player was Ashleigh Simon, who shot 72 points in the first round. Many fans were not aware of the serious condition of Simon as she took the field.
Simon had suffered from a serious stomach infection the night before and barely made it to the course. Commenting on her performance, Simon said, "I don't know what it was, but I hardly slept. I got a shot from the doctor this morning, and I am just very
happy that I managed to hold it together".
Bregman and Simon were joined in the top-10 by an unlikely South African player, Morgana Robbertze. She was a surprise, even for the South African golf commentators. She scored 73 points.
The first round of South African Women’s Open ended with a unique twist, a foreign player, Germany’s Caroline Masson is leading a tournament that is uniquely South African.
Many experts were of the opinion that a South African player would lead the event, with an occasional foreign player making it into the top-10.
The tournament’s favourites, Lee-Anne Pace and Tandi Cuningham who were supposed to be the leaders on the scoreboard are nowhere close to the top-10. Both these stars were tied at the 21st position at the end of round one.
