South African Women’s Open: Tandi Cuningham returns as the defending champion
Tandi Cuningham is excited about the upcoming South African Women’s Open. She has every right to be excited about the event where she is the defending champion.
Tandi Cuningham has been playing professional golf since late 2008. She has competed in 44 tournaments since then. Commentators have commented favourably on her game, praising her strokes and professional attitude on the course.
She holds the South African Women’s Open close to her heart. She is keen to defend her title from top class national and international players.
Being part of Ladies European Tour, Cuningham has been competing at major tournaments of the tour.
2011 was her best year. She competed in 22 events, showing off her grip on the game. She managed to end up 103rd on the Ladies European Tour Money List. With earnings of €16,684, the year was fairly good for her.
Now in 2012, she is all set to defend her title in one of the most prestigious golf tournaments in South Africa. South African Women’s Open is also important because of its current status as a co-sanctioned event.
The event is unique as it is co-sanctioned by both Ladies European Tour and the Women’s Professional Golf Association of South Africa.
This ensures that both South African and international players would compete in the event.
All is, however, not well for Tandi Cuningham and her title as the defending champion. She would face stiff competition from her fellow South African player Lee-Anne Pace. Pace has said that she will do her best to win the trophy for herself.
Pace will not be the only threat to Tandi Cuningham’s title. South African Women’s Open is a major attraction on 2012 LET calendar. Hence, the event will attract outstanding talent from across the globe.
The 54-hole stroke play event is to be held at Selborne Park Golf Club in KwaZulu-Natal. The entry list consists of 84 players.
Women’s Professional Golf Association of South Africa will send 14 participants, who will represent the South African talent. Ladies European Tour will provide the international players.
This event is a perfect opportunity for South African players to gain some international exposure. Seven top amateurs will also be invited to play against 56 international players. In addition, 7 entries are reserved for promoter invitations.
Lee-Anne Pace’s ambitions about the trophy are on record. She is very hopeful about her win and wishes to secure the honour for South Africa.
In a comment, she said, “I can guarantee that we will do everything we can to make sure the trophy stays in South Africa”.
MEC Mike Mabuya Khulu, representing KwaZulu-Natal Department of Economic Development and Tourism, is also hopeful for the success of the tournament. He added that he is anticipating major improvement in the tourism sector as well.
