South African fast bowler, Dale Steyn, has said that he and his team were shattered after the ICC Cricket World Cup 2011 quarter-final defeat against New Zealand.
Cricket fans witnessed a big upset when the Black Caps qualified for the semi-final of the mega event by beating the Proteas in the knockout stage at Dhaka.
Steyn is currently playing the fourth season of the Indian Premier League, representing Deccan Chargers. He said that the whole South African team felt broken after the loss in the quarter-final, it was not like a losing a normal cricket match.
Fast bowler expressed that many players had tears in their eyes while some were shouting and screaming.
He said that the South African team was preparing for the World Cup since their loss in the ICC World T20 2010 in the Caribbean.
Steyn claimed that the whole Proteas team had the self-confidence to win the mega event.
“After we lost that quarterfinal we were blown. We certainly didn’t feel like we had just lost another game of cricket. In the change room I didn’t know whether to cry (some guys were crying their eyes out), break something, scream or shout. I was broken.
Since the T20 WC a year before all of our focus had gone into building for this tournament and we knew we were good enough to win it,” he shared.
Steyn went on to say that World Cups are important but the cricket fans should not consider them everything because other cricket matches are also important.
He added that an international cricketer travels all around the world to play cricket and it is not fair to make some games more important than others.
“After the World Cup I feel like there is maybe too much emphasis on World Cups. It sounds so bad that I say this but why should some games mean so much more than others? We have such hectic schedules and surely all games should matter as much as each other
but World Cups are what people remember,” said Steyn.
