South African earns Olympic ticket via CAVB Beach Volleyball Continental Cup – Volleyball news
The 2012 CAVB Men’s Beach Volleyball Continental Cup had an amazing run from April 13-15 in Mauritius, where South Africa finished in the top slot and settled for Olympic berth.
Republic of South Africa was represented by two tandems in the final phase of the competition, which performed amazingly well and clinched success.
GOLDSCHMIT and CHIVA formed the team1 of South Africa, while second South African team consisted of FREDERICKS and WILLIAMS. They were joined by Angolan pairs in the finals of Continental Cup, which featured a total of four matches.
However, the overall score tied after four matches (2-2) and two sides played a decisive golden set in the end. South Africa captured the golden set and got hold of the Olympic slot.
The final-day action started with a thrilling match between GOLDSCHMIT-CHIVA of South Africa and ABREU-SILVA of Angola. The former duo proved to be better and clinched success 2-0 (21-12, 21-11). With opening match victory, South Africa improved to 1-0.
In the next match, South Africa’s FREDERICKS-WILLIAMS came into contest with SEQUEIRA-SEQUEIRA of Angola. This time the Angolan side got better and pulled off success. They also finished the match in the similar fashion and stamped 2-0 (21-15, 21-18) win
over RSA.
The winning Angolan pair of SEQUEIRA-SEQUEIRA continued with success in the next match, where they defeated GOLDSCHMIT-CHIVA in two consecutive frames. The set scores were 2-0 (22-20, 21-19). With second straight victory, Angola moved to 2-1 on the scoreboard.
Fourth match once again brought ABREU-SILVA of Angola in the centre court. The duo had already lost its first match to RSA1 and could not produce a better result in next fixture with FREDERICKS-WILLIAMS of RSA2. The South African pair posted 2-0 (21-15,
21-15) victory and created the dead-lock of 2-2.
As a result, GOLDSCHMIT-CHIVA of South African and SEQUEIRA-SEQUEIRA of Angola played a golden set. The RSA duo claimed the set 15-11 and marched away with victory.
Chiya expressed his emotions after securing the Olympic spot. He stated, “It is a great moment for me and my team to be a gold medallist and to represent Africa at the Olympic Games. In the first game we played against them it was very hot and very difficult
to play but in the golden set it was much easier and cooler. My team mate and I concentrated on every point.”
Angola failed to overcome South Africa in the final of CAVB Olympic Qualifying Tournament but still has the chances to vie for Olympic berth. The 2012 FIVB Beach Volleyball World Cup Olympic Qualification tournament in Italy will create another opportunity
for Angola to go into the Olympics. The World Qualifications Tournament is set to take centre stage in coming June.
Likewise, Nigeria that picked up the bronze medal at the CAVB Tournament will also try its chances in the FIVB World Qualification Tournament.
