South African traffic topic question?

What do South Africans generally think of the "ornaments" that many South African drivers dangle from their rear view mirrors?

Crucifixes, teddy bears, car air fresheners etc?

I personally find them distasteful, especially crucifixes, my son attends a Catholic school so there are many drivers dropping off their children dangling such crucifixes from the rear view mirror, am I just being insensitive or is such practice a bit tacky in your opinion?

  1. I like it if it is something small, but otherwise it's not a good idea

  2. Ho yes it is distasteful, but remember that many of these drivers are "first generation drivers", meaning that these are the irst people in any given family to ever posses a car, so one can expect many growing pains still...

  3. I cannot understand the tissue boxes at all, I also have tissues in my car (because of the children) but what is the point of putting it in the back window? Only an octopus can reach there. I keep mine in my cubby hole. No Bull I have nothing dangling on or in my car.....a bit common.

  4. Ha ha -  do you remember those cows that people used to put in the back of their cars - when you hit a bump - its head would bop up and down...

I remember my father had the 2 boxing gloves from the Gerrie Coetzee / John Tate fight hanging from his rear-view mirror for about 10 years - it went well with his Peugeot 404 - Station Wagon....

    I think it looks kak....

  5. I have always found that all things dangling from the rear-view mirror stupid. Some of them are far too big or sway erratically while driving. As far as I am concerned they pose a hazard. I have never and will never hang anything on my rear-view mirror. I once drove another person's car and they had a huge fluffy dice dangling from their mirror. I found it distracting and annoying. I do not see why they do not attach the cross or crucifix to the dashboard if they truly feel the need to have it in the car.

  6. I am not a person who likes to have these 'ornaments' in my car. The worst is the CD hanging from the front mirror and then the Swazi hat and tissue box in the back of the car. The latest is these toys hanging out of the car boot. I do not understand the logic and reasoning behind any of these. I that makes some happy, so be it but not in my car.

  7. Don't foget the bandanas ! The stupid scatter cushions they put in the rear window ( It must be there to keep them from seeing the people who swears at them ) and the stupid metal tissue box holders ! If they survive the accident the tissue box will finish the job !

  8. What about the monkeys dangling from the boot.  Just as tacky!!! Or the CD's from the rearview mirror.
