  1. I am not south african, but I think I would, it may give your children an option later if they want it.  That is if SA allows dual nationality.

  2. Well I am not going to have kids for a long time yet!

I don't see myself staying in the UK to have kids, it's a horrible place to bring them up!! However, if I was to find myself having them here I'd register them.

  3. Lol Honey If I was still young enought to have kids yep I will bring them up as Brithish, remember the grass is not always greener on the other side ok,there is just as much violince in SA as there is here in the UK.xxxx

  4. Well, Emjay. My children were born abroad, and then we went to live in SA again. They were happy to be South Africans, more so than Germans, they even "forgot" to speak german. Then when we left SA in 2002, as good as bankrupt, totally traumatised from our over 20 break-ins, risk of rape a very real threat, they landed up in Germany hating it.

By the age of 21, they had to decide which nationality they wanted to have. When it came to travelling with school outings to Italy and Bulgaria and other European destinations, a german identity document proved to be much easier than a South African passport!  So the choice was made for them.  They still have their SA ID document, and thus, can opt to live in SA without a permanent residence permit of similar, should circumstances EVER permit them to WANT to do that.

For me, I will always hang on to my SA passport, although in time to come I will apply for dual citizenship (called retention of SA citizenship), which is permissible if one applies with the SA authorities way  before contemplating adopting the other nationality.  My passport is still valid till 2012, so still have a bit of time to do that - taking into consideration that SA Home affairs will take about 2 years to process the documents!

For those who want to hastily condemn me for my choice  -  I intend to use the german passport for travelling in Europe. Not because I want to renounce my SA citizenship, but because travelling on a german passport is so hassle free. I will always remain a South African! Nobody can ever change that!!

  5. IM NOT HAVING KIDS,IM ONLY 20!

  6. i am south african had girl in uk, so no choice but to register her as south african.... children can always change to where ever they want to live!
