South Africans dominate second round of Africa Open - Golf News
Defending champion Louis Oosthuizen shot a remarkable 11-under par 62 in the second round of the Africa Open at the East London Golf Club to take a two-shot lead on Friday.
Oosthuizen started the round with a four-under par 69 and carded nine spectacular birdies and an eagle to surge to the top position on the leaderboard. His final score after two rounds was 15-under par 131.
"I felt good over the ball today. I was a bit more aggressive. I trusted my swing more and it paid off," Oosthuizen told official European Tour website.
"I was aggressive on the putter. I went about six feet past a few times and I had to make those for par. The last one I made on the eighth would have been eight or ten foot past, but it hit the middle of the cup,” he continued.
"But I was aggressive because yesterday I left a few putts short and you're not going to hit it that far past on these greens," he further added.
The overnight leader, Thomas Aiken, shot a four-under par 69 to finish at 133 and shared the second position with his compatriots, Jaco Ahlers, Retief Goosen and Tjaart Van Der Walt.
Ahlers and Goosen both shot five-under par 68 each. However, Van Der Walt grabbed attention, as he shot a hole-in-one on the second hole and finished nine-under 64 in the end.
His hole-in-one was the first ever in the history of the tournament.
The non-South African player at the highest spot was Magnus A Carlsson, who had the tournament score of 11-under par 135, after he carded seven-under par 66 in the second round of the tournament.
He shared the sixth spot with Tommy Fleetwood, Craig Lee, Danny Willett and Alastair Forsyth.
Overall, the South Africans dominated the second round again, just as they did on the first day.
They are no doubt the favourites for the tournament and consequently, have not given any chance to their competitors from all over the world to rise above and challenge them.
